The Health at Every SizeTM program is not a diet, as Brisbane dietitian and nutritionist Mandy-Lee Noble explains …
With so many diets in the media, it can be easy to think that for most people the only way to be healthier is to lose weight – but this is not the case.
Positive health behaviours like eating well, being physically active and getting enough sleep improve health regardless of what the scales say. And this is great news because for most people diets don’t work long term.1
Health at Every Size recognises human diversity and helps people to establish healthy habits that work for them.
The biggest misconception people have is that weight is a reliable measure of health, when weight is just one factor and not enough to make any conclusions about a person’s health.
Health professionals have better ways to assess the health of their patients than weight, and more effective ways to improve health long term than weight loss. A HAESTM dietitian will offer a range of realistic options to improve your health and wellbeing.
How is a HAES Dietitian Different?
Your HAES dietitian will not set you up for failure – so there will be no diet plans, forbidden foods or fasting. And they will not take your weight unless there is a medical reason to do so.
Most importantly, as a dietitian trained in HAES, I believe it is important to listen to you – because you are the expert of your body and your life.
If not Diets – what does a HAES Dietitian Do?
Health at Every Size is a research-informed and evidence-based approach to health. A HAES dietitian is a fully qualified accredited practising dietitian, who can provide nutrition support for complex medical conditions, with additional skills to support body acceptance and intuitive eating.
Essentially, as a HAES dietitian I am led by my client’s goals and these may include increasing food variety, reconnecting with hunger and fullness cues, or mindful eating.
The research shows HAES works2 and this is not surprising because tuning into your body and making choices based on what makes you feel good, coincides with better nutrition and improved health.
If you would like to pursue health but diets are not the answer for you, I would love to help you establish positive and sustainable health habits that you can enjoy.
